I recently facilitated a weekend mindfulness workshop called 'Awakening the Anchor' for the wives of veterans who have PTSD or an OSI (Operational Stress Injury).
I am humbled, honoured and have deep gratitude for having shared in this incredible opportunity.
It’s interesting to witness and experience how my intention to be of service unfolds in new ways. I could never have conjured up this idea. It presented itself one day at lunch with Melickie Joseph from South Western Ontario Military Family Resource; she had the vision and together with the support of others we brought it to light.
When we are open and let go of the how and the details, the Universe brings us such abundant opportunities and incredible people. Life flows effortlessly.
Our weekend began by creating a safe and sacred space where everyone was honoured to be who they are.
We took the journey inward together.
We laughed, we cried, we meditated, we danced, we were silent, we shared a lot. In just three short days we formed a deep connection. We became soul sisters.
I am in awe of the strength, courage and vulnerability of these women. This was healing for everyone involved, including the facilitators. There was so much love, support, compassion. It was beautiful.
What I know to be true now more than ever:
When we gather together in a safe space with love and respect, we not only heal, we thrive. As humans we need each other. We are wired for connection. And together we make each other stronger and better people.
When we have the courage to be in discomfort, feel our feelings, be vulnerable and lean into it - transformation happens.
Nothing grows in the comfort zone. Many people long for happiness and believe if they push away their emotions, they’ll make space to be happy. But what we are doing is also pushing the happiness away. The tension of pushing away unhappy feelings and emotions can create pain - emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically.
We are resilient beings.
When we can take time to go inward and be; to feel and to explore our true selves, while supported with love, we rediscover the truth of who we are.
The veterans, their wives and families have made many sacrifices for our country. To be able to be of service in this way touched me beyond words.
Thank you to Melickie Joseph for bringing her vision to the light and asking me to collaborate. Thank you to Susan Meehan for her strong presence, wisdom, dance and joy. You were my rocks. Thank you for the generosity of Bell True Patriot Love Fund for making this all possible.
The journey together doesn’t stop here. The connections formed that weekend will be long-lasting and I look forward to seeing this wonderful group again in November for another workshop.
If you or someone you know is struggling, there is hope. I felt it and witnessed it. With open hearts and open minds, we can work together to heal and find true happiness and peace.
With much love and gratitude,
Diane
