Last week I shared with you how much I enjoy spending time with my great-niece Maya who is 3 ½ years old. There are so many things that I adore and appreciate about our time together.
She is present, filled with imagination and has an endearing innocence and joy.
When it comes down to it - she reminds me of who I really am.
When we were born, we were fully present.
We weren’t caught up in the past or worried about the future.
We were connected to our true nature. Meaning, being present is our natural state, and yet as adults, whether we like it or not, it can feel more familiar to live in the past or the future.
How does this look in our daily lives?
When life feels mundane, it’s a sign that we have lost touch with who we are and what really matters at a soul level.
It may feel like there’s no room in our mind, or time in the day to just be.
This is where mindfulness comes in.
When we have a mindfulness practice, we are in essence cleaning house.
Sweeping up the dust bunnies in the corners.
Cleaning the windows so we can see things more clearly.
Getting rid of those old boxes that have been taking up space for years and years.
Opening the windows to let fresh air in so we can breathe.
As a result, we become more and more aware of how much of our time is spent on thinking thoughts or trying to push them away, and when we do this, we begin to notice that most of the thoughts we think today were the same as yesterday or last year.
The reality is, we will continue to think and be controlled by these same thoughts and behaviours tomorrow and years to come, if we don’t clean house.
Nothing changes unless we change.
Unless we take the time to be aware, curious and care enough about ourselves to clean house, we will continue to be bogged down, stressed, overwhelmed and unfulfilled.
It’s not always easy; to go through our old boxes and memorabilia. It can be exhausting. At some point we might feel like we have hit a brick wall and just want to quit.
But we keep going.
It is possible.
We start to see light where there was once darkness.
It is the journey of unlearning and rediscovering our true nature.
When I watch Maya and other children in my life, I see and feel their excitement and enthusiasm. They are enamoured with the simplest of things.
It is possible for us to return to this place of curiosity, wonder and enthusiasm.
There is no greater gift.
