Mindful Monday: Bumping Up Against Resistance

Once again, we find ourselves with more restrictions as to what we can and can’t do.

With orders to stay at home, these changes in routine and the uncertainty of it all, have created room for things to come to the surface - awareness, feelings, questions about life, and in some cases discomfort.

Many people I have talked to are finding themselves asking questions like,

‘What matters to me?’

‘Does this_____bring me closer to happiness and being fulfilled or further away?’

When we ask the questions with an openness, and really listen, something happens.

Maybe we become clear that yes, we are content with our life as it is.

Or it may feel enlightening and exciting thinking about the possibility of change.

Sometimes it can also bring up fear or discomfort. Particularly if becoming closer to what matters to us requires stepping out of our comfort zone.

In this case, a few things might happen.

Fear might show up…

  • We may be afraid of failure

  • People will judge us

  • We don’t want to rock the boat or upset anyone

Or the Inner Critic might say,

‘Who do you think you are?'
‘What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you just be happy the way things are?’
‘Don’t bother. You don’t have what it takes.’

Wherever we find ourselves bumping up against resistance, can we continue to explore with curiosity?

Letting go of the label of good or bad, and right or wrong.

Yes, it may feel uncomfortable.

But what if feeling and being with this discomfort brings us closer to our own happiness and true selves?

I like to ask questions like,

‘What is this resistance all about?’

Resistance or “stuckness” is usually a sign that I am bumping up against an ego structure. Out-dated beliefs that were downloaded into my mind at a very young age.

It is also a sign that a part of me is ready to move forward and be more connected to my true nature.

When I keep this in mind it gives me the motivation to stay with it.

When we take time to be still and inquire without agenda the answers will come.

I also use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping). It is the most effective technique I have used to be free of the old outdated programs or intense emotions that are blocking my clarity and keeping me stuck.

If you find yourself wanting to make change and are stuck it doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you. Not at all.

It means you are human.

It may be a matter of getting your subconscious mind on board, letting it know it is safe to change.

Take some time to be with you.

Grab a pen and paper and ask yourself these questions like,

  • What matters to me?

  • ‘Does this_____bring me closer to happiness and being fulfilled or further away?’

  • What is the upside of staying stuck? (eg: you can play it safe, don’t have to upset people, rock the boat, make a mistake)

  • What is the cost of not changing?

As you’re writing, let go of trying to figure it out. Let your pen be free and the words fall on the page. Observe how your body is responding and be open to receiving insights or messages beyond the conscious mind.

If you are in a place right now of wanting to change but feeling really stuck; if you are lacking clarity, doubting, or judging yourself, please reach out.

You don’t have to stay stuck.

Sometimes asking for support is the very thing that brings us greater clarity, and the ability to move forward with more ease.
