It’s a big time of year for many who celebrate this holiday season, often accompanied by big feelings, and possibly big expectations.
And sometimes, despite our best efforts to slow down and enjoy what matters (maybe that’s time with family, being of service to others, cooking, quiet reflective mornings) we still may find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all and think, “Sheesh, this is exactly what I was wanting to avoid. Again.”
What if we take that moment of awareness and use it as an instant jumping-off point to pause, take a breath, and be present in that moment.
Presence is the best gift to ourselves and to others.
Growing up, my parents planted seeds about the importance of giving. I was raised to think of others and know that other children and people were not as fortunate as we were.
For years my dad dressed up as Santa Claus and would go to the children’s hospital on Christmas morning to give gifts to the kids.
At the time, I didn’t think it was out of the ordinary, until years later when I realized how incredibly special this was – carrying so much importance for both him and those children and their families.
My parents were always giving and now, at 89 years old, my mom still carries on many of her traditions, and my dad who passed five years ago, lives on with his loving presence. He is one of my angels.
At this time of year, I am reminded of his giving nature. For me the holiday season is about giving of myself, reflecting, and connecting.
The two most important gifts I can give are presence + kindness.

This holiday season let’s do our best to let go of the big expectations and focus on just that – presence + kindness.
Maybe easier said than done but remember, even if it’s a mixed bag of hustle and bustle meets, engaged, present moments with others, you’re still planting the seeds to continue growing.
