Mindful Monday: Life is Like a Movie

Do you like to watch movies? I sure do.

Now, what if your life was the movie and you were to step back and observe? To be aware of the role you play and witness things as they unfold.

If our minds are going nonstop and we are living on autopilot we are in our movie, we are not watching or observing our movie.

That was me for most of my life, not observing myself or my movie. I was very reactive and oblivious to the fact that observing myself and my life was even a possibility.

Having a mindfulness practice has changed that a lot for me.

Yes, we’re the lead characters and we have our supporting actors. Sometimes our movie is a thriller, comedy, tragedy, love story, dramedy. It changes. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry. Sometimes we love the movie we are in we want to hit the replay button so it will last forever. Sometimes we want to fast forward a scene that we are so done with and want to move on from.

Yet, wherever we find ourselves, we notice the allowing or the resistance with compassion.

We have the opportunity to practice finding acceptance knowing that in any given moment we are the doing the best we can.

Practice being the observer of everything with compassion and curiousity.

This is when we are co-creating with the Universe. We are taking part in our life rather than being on the sidelines.

I love it when I step back and am the observer of it all. I am more present. Everything feels more alive. The lens in which I see things is much clearer and in greater detail. I feel more empowered.

It allows for space to breathe and have a mindful check-in. I am more present, less reactive, and more trusting in myself and in life.

I am less focused on things needing to change and more present to what is. And it is a moment-to-moment practice.

What’s required is our intention to pay attention.

When we wake up in the morning our movie starts. It’s show time. We can’t control what emotions will show up. We can’t control what thoughts we automatically think.

But we can connect to who we really are rather than who we should be. We start showing up fully
recognizing that we are unique. There is no one else who can play the role we are meant to play.

So, this week will you join me in watching our movie?

Step back – be curious, observe, and notice the role you are playing and anytime you become aware you aren’t present, you are present.

This is the perfect time to pause, breathe, do a check-in.

And remember, being the observer takes practice! So go easy on yourself and enjoy the film.

With gratitude,

Diane
