Growing up, my parents planted seeds about the importance of giving. I was raised to think of others and know that other children and people were not as fortunate as we were.
For years my dad dressed up as Santa Claus and would go to the children’s hospital on Christmas morning to give gifts to the kids.
At the time, I didn’t think it was out of the ordinary, until years later when I realized how incredibly special this was – carrying so much importance for both him and those children and their families.
My parents were always giving and now, at 91 years old, my mom still carries on many of those traditions, and my dad who passed seven years ago, lives on with his loving presence. He is one of my angels.
At this time of year, I am reminded of their giving nature. For me the holiday season is about giving of myself, reflecting, and connecting.
Last night I volunteered at Ark Aid Street Mission. We served 140 Christmas dinners to folks in our community. It was a rich experience.
For me, it was so much more than serving food. I was there for a limited time, so I treated it like an opportunity to engage with people and offer love and kindness. Yes, many people are starving for food in our city, and they are also starving for love, respect, and meaningful connection.
“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence.
When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Sometimes we can underestimate the power of our presence. We don’t have to do, buy, or accomplish anything. When we live a more embodied life, we are connected to our true essence, communicating and living from a place of beingness.
Our presence is the gift.
Wishing you much peace during this holiday season, and looking forward to connecting with you again in the new year.
With love,
Diane
